Community Energy Saving Grant Scheme Launched in Bath & North East Somerset

Are you an energy saving champion?

Thursday, September 13, 2012

A new scheme to help communities save energy and reduce carbon emissions has been launched by Bath & North East Somerset Council.
The Local Energy Champions Award will provide one award of £400 every three months for a community group to use on activities that will benefit the local community and reduce carbon emissions. Groups can apply by filling in an application form, and a different group will receive the award every quarter.
The new initiative builds on the success of the Council’s Local Energy Champions scheme, which has been running since 2010, providing support, training and equipment to groups working on energyefficiency or renewable energy projects. The aim of the scheme is to support groups to contribute to the target of cutting the communities carbon emissions by 45% by 2026.
The Award was launched last week (6th September) at the Council’s Environmental Networking Event, which enabled community groups working on green projects to meet each other, discuss their activities, and find out about the resources and support available to them.
Over twenty community groups from across Bath and North East Somerset attended and enjoyed the food provided by Fareshare Bath, a community project that uses surplus food that would otherwise have been wasted.
Councillor David Martin, the Council’s Energy and Climate Change Champion, said, “It was fantastic to see so many community groups coming together to share information and resources, and the Council’s new Local Energy Champions Award was very well received. These groups are helping to create the low carbon community that we are striving for, and the Award will provide some financial support to enable more local action.”
Nic Dore of Bathford Energy Group who attended the event said: “The Environmental Networking Event was vibrant and well organised. It was very inspiring to meet such a diverse range of groups from the area and learn about their activities. We welcome the Local Energy Champions Award scheme which offers much needed support for such groups to bring greater self-reliance and sustainability to their communities.”
All not-for-profit groups in Bath and North East Somerset are eligible to apply for the award. The closing date for the first award is 26th October and guidance and application forms are available online at
